Your Health is Your Responsibility: Be a Consumer

Anu Lawrence • March 20, 2025

We are empowered to make decisions in so many aspects of our lives, from the foods we eat, to the clothes we wear, what we drive or listen to on the stereo. So, why don't we take the reigns with our own health and our bodies?

Did you ever think about being a consumer as it relates to your health? What does it mean to be a consumer as opposed to somebody who is sitting in the backseat and just taking orders?

So often what happens in the health and wellness world is that we as patients are just told what to do and we just follow. We follow doctors’ orders without question and don’t listen to our own instincts, our own intuitive sense because we assume that we aren’t experts. But who knows better than you what your individual needs may be?

When we talk about being a consumer, think about the clothes you are currently wearing (assuming you aren’t reading this in a bathtub). You chose the color, style, fit and fabric that you prefer, didn’t you? You’re probably doing the same with the car you drive and numerous others options in your life, but unfortunately when it comes to health and wellness, we have that ‘white lab coat effect’ where we say well my doctor or practitioner told me this so I’m just gonna do it.’

I can’t tell you how many people I’ve met that have regrets for not listening to their own instincts in the moment and just following what the protocol might’ve been. Yes there’s a good reason for those protocols and best practices, but they aren’t based on you as an individual, so I would encourage you to have agency and make decisions that really align with your belief system and educate yourself so you can make the best decisions for you.

Do your research and take those expert opinions into consideration, and then trust yourself and your own best judgment with your own health.
